Help me get to know Soccer?

So, I'm obviously American, and no one cares about soccer here. I am kind of interested in watching and following soccer, particularly international soccer, since the MLS pretty much sucks. But I need to know what league/team/ whatever to follow!? It seems like there is an impossible number of leagues out there. I know most people would say the English premier league, right? But I also know there's a lot more to international soccer than that league, I just have no idea where to start... Please help? :)
